Properties of Rayon
Rayon is a versatile man made fiber that
has use in different industries. It has certain properties that makes it
useful for manufacturing a number of products. Some of the properties
are:
- Strength: The tensile strength of
viscose rayon is greater than that of wool. Its strength however
reduces 40 to 70 percent when weak. The fiber is fairly durable,
economical and smooth.
- Elasticity: The fibber has more
elasticity as compared to cotton or linen, but less than wool and
silk. Undue strain can also cause them to sag or even burst.
- Resilience: The fiber lacks the
resilience natural to wool and silk, and creases easily. The
creasing can be reduced by using multi filament rayons, goos weaving
and finishing process.
- Absorbency: Rayon is one of the
most absorbent of all fibers. It is more absorbent than cotton and
linen.
- Heat Conductivity: Rayon is a good
conductor of heat and can be used for summer clothing. It is also
used to manufacture carpets and rugs.
